English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)

At our school, we celebrate the rich cultural and linguistic diversity of our students. Our EAL/D (English as an Additional Language or Dialect) program is designed to support students who are learning English in addition to their home language, helping them to fully participate and succeed in all areas of school life.

Our EAL/D support includes:

• Targeted English Language Development: Tailored teaching strategies and resources to improve students’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in English.

• Individualised Learning Plans: Programs designed to meet the specific needs of each student, ensuring they receive appropriate support at their level.

• Cultural Inclusion: Promoting respect, understanding, and celebration of diverse cultures within the school community.

• Collaboration: Working closely with classroom teachers, families, and community members to support students’ learning and wellbeing.

• Assessment and Monitoring: Regular assessment to track progress and adjust support as needed to enhance language acquisition.

• Enrichment Opportunities: Encouraging EAL/D students to participate in all school activities, including extra-curricular programs, to build confidence and social connections.

• Phases of English Language Learning: We recognise that students progress through different phases as they develop English proficiency, including:

  • Emerging: Beginning to understand and use basic English.
  • Developing: Building vocabulary and sentence structures.
  • Consolidating: Using English with increasing confidence in academic and social contexts.
  • Expanding: Achieving fluency and the ability to use English for complex tasks.
